Why choose Ashihara martial arts?
This martial art blends karate discipline with dynamic drills for real-life situations. You’ll learn effective movement, timing and distance control in a safe, supportive environment while improving overall conditioning.
- Build fitness: Develop endurance, agility and flexibility.
- Real skills: Strikes, blocks, takedowns and escapes you can apply.
- Confidence & focus: Progress on the mats carries into daily life.
- Community: Respectful culture, encouraging coaches and training partners.
- Stress relief: Energetic sessions that clear the mind and boost energy.
Training in practice
Most sessions are partner-based: distance management, timing and efficient counters. Pad work and kick shields let you train safely while experiencing power and speed. Newcomers build foundations step by step with clear coaching. Instead of only solo forms, our program uses paired kata from a fighting stance so every movement has a purpose for self-protection. Sparring (kumite) is introduced gradually and adapted to each level — safety first.

Benefits
- Better cardiovascular health and stamina.
- Practical habits for everyday safety and awareness.
- Mental discipline, focus and resilience.
- Clear milestones via belt progression and skill goals.
- A supportive dojo community you’ll enjoy training with.
Origins of the style
Developed in Japan in the 1970s by Hideyuki Ashihara, the style emphasizes efficiency and realism through the Sabaki principle: move off the attack line to a superior angle and resolve the situation quickly. Although the art is full-contact, training is controlled and safe for all levels — the international federation uses the motto ”Safe karate for everyone”. Learn more from the New International Karate Organisation (NIKO). Today, this system is practiced in dozens of countries worldwide.

FAQ – starting Ashihara martial arts
Do I need prior experience?
No. Beginners are welcome, and techniques are taught step by step at your pace. Beginners and experienced students train in the same hall, but instructors adapt to each level.
Can I try Ashihara karate for free?
Yes — your first 4 sessions are free at all our dojos. You can simply show up at training, no advance registration required. A short message to your dojo’s contact person (text or WhatsApp) beforehand is appreciated but not necessary.
Can I start anytime?
Yes. New students are accepted throughout the year — no separate beginner course required, and no need to wait for a new season to begin.
Is it suitable for children?
Yes, in two of our dojos. Junior groups train at Nishi Dojo in Helsinki and Zanshin Dojo in Vantaa. At our Espoo dojo (Kannusillanmäki), the youngest students are 14 years old and train together with adults. All children’s sessions are age-appropriate and focus on movement skills, coordination and good training habits.
What equipment do I need?
For your first sessions, comfortable sportswear (t-shirt and sweatpants) is enough. We train barefoot or in socks. Bring your own water bottle. A gi (karate uniform) and protective gear for sparring are purchased later, once you’ve decided to continue.
Does Ashihara have the principles of Kyokushin karate?
Yes, the roots are in Kyokushin. The founder, Hideyuki Ashihara, was a long-standing Kyokushin master who established his own style in 1980. Ashihara preserves Kyokushin’s full-contact tradition and realistic sparring, but adds the sabaki principle: instead of meeting the attack head-on, you move off the line into a better angle. Although the art is full-contact, training is controlled and safe for all levels — the international federation NIKO uses the motto ”Safe karate for everyone”.
